Story of Nagappa & Rudramma Family

Here is a beautiful story of what one can do to bring about a change…

Two and a half year ago when I started the construction of my home, I had this couple (Nagappa & Rudramma) with their two small children appointed as the caretakers of the construction site by the builder and beside they also worked as daily labourers at the site as well.

My attention drew on the little children who were all the time playing in the sand, cement, slurry, stones and sharp items around the construction site. The parents had to work hard throughout the day while the kids played in such unsafe conditions prone to mishaps. They were lovely kids cheerful and innocent. Many a time I used to get them chocolates, old clothes & old toys of my children, which they accepted with great happiness.

But I knew, once my house is completed they will be moved to a new construction project where the location would change but not their lives. The kids would continue to play in sand, cement, water, slurry and grow up probably, following the footsteps of their parents.

Honestly, I did. I wanted to help them. I knew giving small gifts or some money wouldn’t make a big difference to their future. So I had to think and act practically.

I wished to see the kids are given an opportunity to join school and to have a normal childhood. I came out with a plan and spoke to this family to explain how education plays an important role in securing their kids future so that they need not struggle like them to make both ends meet.

The very first reaction from the couple was, sir we understand, but poor people like us work so hard to earn a square meal and education is indeed a distant dream. We keep moving one construction after another as our employer instructs. This is how we live and simply we cannot afford.

Poverty and lack of support is what makes many to suffer as well as struggle in life.

But I was determined to do something about these kids future so I came out with a plan. I asked this family if they would stay near my house if I rented a small house for them? Then I charted a plan where the man( Nagappa) would continue to go to work and the woman ( Rudramma) would stay in the home to look after the kids.

I knew I just need to get this started and then somehow everything will move forward.

I just took the initiative and rented a small house near to my home and told them I would take care of the children education and its expenses.

Now Nagappa & his family lives in a small rented accommodation nearby to my home so that they don’t move on like nomads changing location, construction after construction. His wife looks after the kids and earns a small income working in our household helping my wife. Their first son Mani Kanta joined and started the school at Sunshine English School, Kalkere, Bangalore.

You should see the happiness in the proud couple’s eyes – the very first day their son wears a school uniform and is off to school. Its really was magical. I felt GOOD
