Supporting the Unseen Protectors of Our Forests: GT FOUNDATION at Bhadra Tiger Reserve

It is sheer passion for forests and wildlife that inspired Prashanth K. Nageshappa, an IT professional who chose to dedicate a significant part of his life to the wilderness of Bhadra Forest. Volunteering extensively with the Karnataka Forest Department, Prashanth has truly made the forest his second home. Over time, his unwavering commitment has made him a valuable asset not only to wildlife conservation but also to the Forest Department itself.

Beyond being a wildlife enthusiast, Prashanth displayed remarkable human sensitivity by recognizing the struggles of the forest guards—the unseen heroes who protect our forests and wildlife round the clock. Stationed deep inside the forest, these frontline workers operate under extremely challenging conditions, often far from medical facilities, and are constantly exposed to health risks with little or no access to immediate medical care.

Concerned by this reality, Prashanth brought the issue to Dr. Manohar K.N., Health Director of GT Foundation. This led GT Foundation to conceptualize and implement a practical and sustainable solution—the provision of Medical Kits for forest guards serving in remote areas of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve.

Medical Support for Frontline Wildlife Protectors

With his medical expertise, Dr. Manohar K.N., Medical Director of GT Foundation, curated comprehensive medical kits containing essential and most-needed medications. Each kit included clear usage instructions and prescriptions in both English and the local language, enabling forest guards to confidently and safely use the medicines in emergency situations.

On Sunday, 8th March 2015, GT Foundation and the Karnataka Forest Department jointly organized a Medical Check-up Camp and Medical Kit Distribution for all Anti-Poaching Camps (APCs) of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve. The initiative was further supported by the Lions Club and the Bhadra Reserve (BR) Project.

While the Karnataka Forest Department facilitated medical screening for APC staff and Eco-Development Committee (EDC) members, GT Foundation distributed 45 medical kits, ensuring that each APC camp had access to essential healthcare resources.

The event was graced by Sri Sanjai Mohan, I.F.S., APCCF, Karnataka Forest Department, as the Chief Guest, whose presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in wildlife conservation.
